How (We Thought) We Named Lewis Rogers Lane Pinot Noir
Welcome to Lewis Rogers Lane, the tiny country road that outlines half of our property; the road we have turned down ten thousand times in the past twenty-six years. Some days our thoughts might wander in the direction of the pioneer, Lewis Rogers, who settled this area so many moons ago. Most days, though, other thoughts take priority as the present drowns out the distant past. That all changed this spring, though, when we received a curious message from a long lost cousin. A return call revealed that our family, the McClures, had twice married into the Rogers family, thereby connecting the two pioneering families. Mic drop. Mind blown.
Once upon a time, a decade or two ago (time flies when you’re growing grapes), Brad had created a new pinot noir blend and we were searching for a name. This blend represented every producing pinot noir clone on our property (in contrast to our single-clone pinot noir we called Pioneer), so the name had to somehow capture the entirety of our property. One morning, while walking the steep vineyard hill Kathleen had jokingly nicknamed Mount Lewis Rogers, it hit her: call the wine Lewis Rogers Lane. It seemed poetic to pay homage to the road that hugs the vineyard, the homes, the winery, the family.
And for over twenty years we thought we had named our wine after our little country road. Silly us.
